2012 is the implementation year of various projects under the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) and the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP).
Focus will most likely be on construction and, oil and gas related which are reported to be among the biggest beneficiaries for the future projects.
Key projects included catalytic jobs such as that in Greater KL and the Klang Valley as well as in the growth corridors.
The construction projects announced by the Government will benefit not just the big players. Projects such as medium-cost housing and schools will benefit the small players.
Checks among industry players showed that most are expecting more than enough works to go around. There was talk of some RM30bil worth of road jobs up for grabs some under the Second Rolling Plan (RP2) and some under the 10MP.
Under Budget 2012, several public projects such as upgrading and maintenance of schools, construction of new blocks, upgrading of hospitals, flood mitigation programme, upgrading of basic rural infrastructure as well as construction of public houses, including for fishermen and the low-income group, will be implemented.
This year (2012) will see the start of the RP2 implementation. A total RM98.4bil will be allocated under the RP2 RM49.2bil each for 2012 and 2013. The main projects to be implemented under the RP2 are:
- Gemas-Johor Baru double-tracking rail project;
- Lebuhraya Pantai Timur Jabor-Kuala Terengganu, Lebuhraya Pantai Barat Banting-Taiping, Lebuhraya Segamat-Tangkak and Lebuhraya Central Spine as well as the construction of Kota Marudu-Ranau road; and
- Redevelopment of the Sungai Besi Kuala Lumpur Air Base.
Sunway Construction Sdn Bhd has secured a contract worth RM308.9mil from Iskandar Malaysia Studios Sdn Bhd for the building of an integrated media studios facility in Iskandar Malaysia, Johor. The project is targeted to be fully completed in 19 months.
On 11 October 2011, KUB Malaysia Bhd announced that its wholly-owned unit KUB Builders Sdn Bhd has secured a Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd’s contract worth RM269mil to build runway for the latter’s the low-cost carrier terminal in Sepang.
The scope of works would include runway 3, Parallel Taxiway Connecting Taxiways and associated works.
With this award, the bulk of the KLIA2 works packages have already been awarded. It estimates that MAHB has so far dished out some RM2.5bil worth of construction contracts for the airport.
